I haven’t been a big fan of our state’s “New Mexico True” advertising campaign, mostly because I don’t understand what it’s trying to say. Through a conversation with friends the other night, however, it occurred to all of us that it could refer to the obvious — that there is indeed something especially authentic and true about New Mexico. There’s something especially authentic and true about life here, about people here. New Mexico tends to eschew pretense, embrace the outlandish, and proudly display its raw edge. To me, this feels like freedom.
What I’m thinking about this week is the fact that this authenticity, this truth, this freedom is an amazing place from which to start. From here, we are poised to launch into any creative vision we dare to embody. AND for such authenticity to be powerful, it needs to keep moving forward. We can’t stop with cozy self-acceptance, with “that’s just who I am.” We need to celebrate both who we are and who we wish to be, who we can be, who we are becoming.
I can’t wait to see you this Saturday at Albuquerque Center for Spiritual Living (abqcsl.org). Service at 6:00, community & cheer at 5:30. XO, Rev. Drew
